Cullompton 17 - 5 Exmouth
Although still affected by several injuries it was very encouraging to be able to take 22 players to fulfil this merit table fixture at Cullompton.
The first half was a gruelling battle between two sets of forwards that reluctantly gave up ground. Both team can be proud of the skills they are developing and for Exmouth Matt Kain, moving from second to back row had an immense game. Tom (Bear) Roberts started up front and gave a credible performance against county level opposition. And although still one of the smaller players on the field Alex Hole tackled everything and took every opportunity to run at the opposition.
With half-time looming Cullompton opted for a penalty and shortly after the restart converted a try, and on balance this didn't reflect the territory Exmouth enjoyed.
Playing with the slop Exmouth started the second half brighter and Ben Waistell kept the forwards moving with some deft chips for them to run onto.
During the first half the backs played a solid defensive game but now started to demonstrate their own flair with penetrating runs from Archie O'Connell and terry Mears. From one such foray into the Cullompton half Terry Mears charging run saw him break through several tackles to score out wide. He showed great strength and determination carrying the ball for some 30 metres before crossing the line. The conversion by Kev Rodwell just drifted wide of the upright.
Exmouth upped their game and at 10-5 started putting on the pressure and it was the turn of Cullompton to hold their line with Exmouth having to settle on no fewer than 3 occasions for a scrum having failed to ground the ball.
Exmouth grew in confidence and committed more to their attack as the game moved into the final stages and were caught by a breakaway converted try that put the game out of reach.
Once again Chris Button played a major part in this Exmouth performance and was one of several contenders for Man of the Match which was awarded to Matt Kain.
This was a very encouraging performance and we are proud of the commitment and effort given right up to the final whistle.
