Wellington 3 - 24 Exmouth
With no league rugby on Saturday Exmouth RFC 2nds travelled to Wellington and secured a well deserved victory. From the off Exmouth applied the pressure so much so that they were awarded a penalty in the 4th minute in front of the posts for the defending player being offside, Dean Chisling stepped up and converted, first points to Exmouth 0 - 3.
Ten minutes later on one of Wellington's rare visits to the Exmouth 22 and Wellington were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck which they converted to level the score at 3 all. Exmouth responded almost immediately with a well taken lineout set up the driving maul to within a couple of metres of the Wellington try line, scrum half Neil Hooper took control of the ball, fed Richard Hall at fly half who charged over the line to score Exmouth's first try which was converted by Dean Chisling 3 - 10 to Exmouth.
Their second try came from a counter attack by Nathan Budd after Wellington attempted to clear their line with a kick up field, Nathan gathered the ball broke down the left wing passed to the winger Duncan Harrison who was tackled just short of the line. With so many of the Exmouth players in support the ball was quickly recycled by Neil Hooper who passed the ball to Seb Phelps who powered over the line to score, with Dean Chisling making the conversion that made the half time score 3 - 17 to Exmouth.
The second half started very similar to the first however it was Wellington applying the pressure using their bigger forwards to try and smash their way through to the Exmouth line, with some hard tackling and a resolute defence Exmouth withstood the barage of Wellington players and slowly managed to work themselve out of defence. The second half was 21 minutes old before Exmouth could breack out from defence with a well placed kick when Duncan Harrison beat the Wellington fullback to the ball and sprinted a good 30m to go over the Wellington line unopposed and again Dean Chislling stepped up to convert the try for the extra points 3 - 24 to Exmouth.
Wellington's response was to stick with the forward onslaught but to no avail the Exmouth defensive line held fast, this worked in favour of Exmouth because Wellington were becoming more and more frustrated and started to give away penalties, this enabled Exmouth to clear their line and get back into the game so much so that they finished the game on top but were unable to add to the score line, so the game finished with Exmouth winning by 24 points to 3. A hard fought and well deserved win.
