Clevedon 0 - 55 Exmouth
Saturday saw Exmouth RFC Quins travel up the M5 to North Somerset to take on Clevedon RFC second team.
On a cold but sunny afternoon the Quins pre match talk was all about playing an open running game of rugby and they didn't disappoint. Within the first couple of minute of the start of the game, when the Quins turned the ball over from a Clevedon maul, they spun the ball wide through several pairs of hand only to come up short of the try line by some frantic Clevedon defending.
It took just eight minutes of the game for Exmouth to score when fly half Adam Garner broke through the Clevedon three quarter line after receiving quick recycled ball from his forwards to score under the posts, the try was converted by Richard Cadywould, seven nil to Exmouth.
A further five minutes into the game saw Adam Garner score another try and Exmouth's second from a similar position to his first, however the Clevedon defence forced him wide trying to making the conversion more difficult, up stepped Richard and dully put the kick over, fourteen nil to Exmouth.
In the nineteenth minute of the game saw flanker Joe Heaver go over the try line when him finished of a back row move from an attacking Exmouth scrummage, with Richard's conversion going over making the score line twenty one points to nil in Exmouth's favour. Shortly after another member the Exmouth back row scored when flanker Russ Coombes went over the Clevedon try line finish a well executed three quarter move, twenty six nil to Exmouth.
In the twenty ninth minute saw Richard Cadywould playing at full back score an individual try when he gather a wayward defensive kick and take on the Clevedon defence up the right hand touch line to score in the corner, thirty one nil to the Quins. Right on the stroke of half time saw Russ Coombes score his second try when he pounced on a loose ball from a lineout to go over in the corner, with the conversion being missed it still made an excellent half time score of thirty six points to nil in Exmouth's favour.
The second started much the same as the first, the only difference it only took the Quins three minute to score when second row Jack Westlake went over under the posts, Richard converted forty three points to nil. In the fifteenth minute of the second half Winger Terry Mears went over the try line in the corner when he out sprinted the Clevedon defence, forty eight nil to Exmouth.
Just four minutes after Terry's try came Exmouth ninth try when hooker Albert Tatevosyan scored his first try for the club when he finished off some excellent inter-play by the Exmouth forwards, Richard converted Fifty five points to nil in Exmouth's favour. From this point in the game, whether it was Exmouth taking their foot off the pedal or what, but the big Clevedon forwards started to take the game to Exmouth and for approximately the next ten minutes they threw everything at Exmouth, even though the Quins were fifty five points up they were not going to let Clevedon cross their try line, time and time again Clevedon tried but the tenacious defensive line of Exmouth stood solid. It was during one of these Clevedon onslaughts that Exmouth were able to brake free from defence and counter attack Clevedon getting within metres of their try line but just failing to cross it.
With the game coming to an end Exmouth had several more attempts to cross the Clevedon line but to no avail, Clevedon held out to the final whistle. The final scoreline Exmouth Quins fifty five, Clevedon Seconds nil.
