Exmouth 32 - 16 Camborne
Before the start of the game both sets of supporters knew that this would be the last game for a while between the two sides. Camborne, are set to drop into the Western Counties Division whereas Exmouth, crowned Champions last week at Clevedon, looked forward to pastures new and South West 1 rugby. The pride of playing for one of the Duchy’s oldest clubs could be one of the reasons for Camborne’s storming display in the first half when they posted a 16pts-7 lead at the half time whistle. The second half was a different matter altogether when the Cockles finally turned up and played like South West 2 Champions.
Due to an injury to Skipper Mark Wathes, Brad Perkins came in on the wing and Ollie Turton moved to fullback and Exmouth got off to a good enough start when they quickly laid siege to the visitors line. Tensions were running high and a Camborne player was sin binned after only four minutes play. From the penalty the ball was pumped to the visitors 5 metre line, the penalty having been advanced twenty yards for a bit of unnecessary chat to Referee Mr Nigel Stephenson of the Gloucester RRS. A regulation catch and drive trundled over the Camborne line and the alert Ben Boswell touched down with Richard Cadywould adding the points.
Within minutes another Camborne player left the field for a stay in the bin, so with only thirteen players a Camborne riposte was the last thing that should have happened, but it did when centre Joe Parma ripped open the Exmouth defence to score under the posts. David Mankee added the conversion so after a disastrous start the visitors were back on par. For the next thirty minutes Exmouth could not do anything right and the penalty count just kept rising, Andrew Smith replaced Graham Smith in the back row after thirty minutes but by half time David Mankee had slotted three penalties and Camborne had a lead of 16pts-7.
Camborne restarted the game and receiving the ball Richard Cadywould pumped a long kick to the Camborne 22. The lineout produced a scrum for Camborne but the ball found its way to Jack Downie who tore into the visitors’ defence who went offside at the maul. Richard Cadywould kicked the penalty and with the score at 10pts-16 the Cockles were now looking more the part. The pack started to come alive with the second row pairing of Stuart Lowe and James Finnegan starting to show their presence and the front row of Tom Blampied, Ed Baxter and Adam Hooper were putting in some telling drives and with sixteen minutes of the half played Richard Cadywould kicked his second penalty.
Minutes later ball carrying Stuart Lowe broke out of a scrum on half way, a deft pass to Jack Downie gave the winger enough space to out run the Camborne defence and he scored close in. Richard Cadywould kicked the two points and Exmouth took the lead 20pts-16. Shane Cooper and Martin Westaway joined the fray and Exmouth continued to pile on the pressure and with ten minutes of normal play remaining a speculative kick by Richard Cadywould was taken over the line by Camborne giving the Cockles a 5 metre scrum in a good position. With the scrum now in complete control Chris Strong picked up and scored to round off another good performance by the young No 8.
The game was now beyond Camborne and inevitably Gary Hooper started the final score of the campaign when he broke from the half way line and passed to Seb Phelps who with a couple of dummies slipped past the Camborne defence to score an unconverted try.
The Cockles head for South West One next season, accompanied by Chippenham, South West 2 (East) champions and maybe, Barnstaple, who contest the play off game with East Division runners up Salisbury.
